A Taizé worship service involves sung and chanted prayers, meditation, periods of silence, bible readings, and in some cases icons. There is no preaching, no teaching. There is just an elegantly simple service.
“It is a time to rest in God, to let the words
listened to and sung penetrate one’s being.”
Song is one of the most essential elements of Taizé worship. Short chants, repeated again and again, give it a meditative character. Using just a few words, usually lines from Psalms or other pieces of Scripture, they express a basic reality of faith, quickly grasped by the mind. As the words are said or sung over many times, this reality gradually penetrates the whole being. And the simple songs then enable us to keep on praying when we are alone, by night and by day, sometimes in the silence of our hearts.
